Homeless Assist
In the early fall of 2014 Harold Stewart, a decades long member of Star Lodge #1, presented the lodge a local Prince Hall Mason affiliate, with an opportunity to perform community service. The Jefferson County Homeless Coalition was in need of one more piece to solve the puzzling dilemma of how to make the operation of establishing warm shelter for the homeless in the county manageable. Acting as liaison between Star Lodge and the Coalition, he volunteered the resources of the lodge in the form of logistical support, manpower and trucks to transport cots and personal items of the clients from one church domicile to the next on a weekly basis.
The program was kicked off in November of that year and is still going strong. What is sad is that the need for winter shelter for the homeless persist. What is encouraging is that the will to make this program work has persisted.
